David Haas

David Haas leads Stout’s Chicago Intellectual Property Practice. He has served as a damages expert witness in a wide array of litigation matters, including intellectual property (patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, false advertising) and general commercial disputes. With a background in engineering (two degrees as well as prior work experience) and over 35 years of experience in intellectual property damages determination, David is uniquely skilled in his ability to understand and communicate damages concepts related to complex technology. He has testified in Federal District Court on over 30 occasions and has also testified in state court and in arbitrations on issues such as lost profits, reasonable royalties, unjust enrichment, price erosion, prejudgment interest, and other compensation topics, including determination of incremental costs, market share, and manufacturing and marketing capacity.

In addition, David has experience in determining the value of intangible assets, including intellectual property, for a variety of purposes such as licensing, mergers and acquisitions, technology management and commercialization, and tax planning.

David has written articles and made presentations to numerous professional groups on topics, including intellectual property damages determination, damages discovery and trial presentation, intangible asset valuation, and intellectual property licensing. David has also been asked to speak and write about his experience in using web analytics and social media data in intellectual property disputes and valuation assignments. From 2000 to 2014, he was an Adjunct Professor at The John Marshall Law School, where he taught an annual course in intellectual property valuation.

In addition to his Stout responsibilities, Mr. Haas serves on the Leadership Council for Stevie Van Zandt’s TeachRock.org and on the Education Committee for the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center.
