Jeffrey Szafran began his career as a financial statement auditor at a Big Five public accounting firm. He specializes in accounting and other internal investigations, forensic accounting assignments, white-collar defense assistance, financial reporting matters, and business disputes involving damages and lost profits.
Jeff has led numerous internal investigations of public registrants into accounting and financial reporting issues. He has assisted counsel in communicating findings to audit committees and has appeared before the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on numerous occasions to present investigative findings. These investigations have covered a wide array of accounting and reporting issues, including revenue recognition, stock option accounting, acquisition accounting, cost accounting, income tax accounting, reserve accounting, and inadequate disclosure.
He has provided testimony and advice in a wide array of business dispute matters, including numerous purchase price disputes. In this capacity, he has analyzed and prepared damage and lost profit calculations and provided analysis of defalcation schemes. Jeff has testified in court as well as at arbitration hearings, including before arbitrators from the American Arbitration Association. He has also served as an arbitrator.
Jeff also brings significant experience in assisting counsel in the defense of individuals involved in white-collar cases. His work on these matters has included deposition preparation assistance, review of audit work papers and other relevant accounting records, preparation of issue memoranda for trial counsel, and assistance with Wells submissions. He also has extensive experience defending auditors against malpractice claims.
Jeff has given lectures on accounting and fraud on numerous occasions to accountants, lawyers, and financial executives. He was the primary author of the “An Analysis of Restatement Matters” report, which was widely cited by the business press and by the General Accounting Office and was quoted in numerous publications, including The Wall Street Journal and CFO Magazine.
He was formerly a Partner at RSM LLP. Prior to that, he was a Managing Director in the Forensic Accounting practice of Alvarez & Marsal LLC. Previously, he was a Partner at Floyd Advisory LLC.
